1881



Spring: Vincent goes to Etten to see Theo, and they discuss his future as an artist. He stays in Etten, drawing landscapes.



Summer: Vincent falls in love with his recently widowed cousin ' Kee' Vos-Stricher, who is staying in Eten with her son. She returns to Amsterdam earlier than planned.



Autumn: Vincent goes to Amsterdam to propose to kee, but she does not even allow him to call. Vincent holds a hand in a candleflame to prove to her parents how serious he is.



November-December. First oil and watercolor still lifes. Relations with his parents are strained because he is still obsessed with Kee and his religious views are extreme. At Christmas he has a violent quarrel with his father. He even rejects his father's gift of money and leave Etten.



1882



January:

Vincent moves to The Hague, living near Mauve, who give him painting tuition and lends him money. Theo continues to send 100-200 guldens per month. Vincent's relations with Mauve cool off, partly because he refuses to work from plaster models. He meets Clasina Maria Hoornik ( Known as Sien), an alcoholic prostitute, who is pregnant. He looks after her, and she occasionally sits for him.



March:

Though his admiration is undiminished, vincent severs his links with Mauve. He does a good deal of drawing from Nature. Apart from Sien, most of his models come from poor districts.



June:

Hospital, to be cured of gonorrhoea. His father visits him . Vincent wants to marry Sien, though his family and friends advise against it. He takes her to Leiden to give birth, and looks for a flat for a family of four.



Summer:

Discovers the attraction of oils and begins to examine the problems of color. Theo pays for his painting materials. Their father accepts a living at Nuenen and moves there with his family.



Autumn:





For the rest of the year ( and througfh to summer 1883) Vincent stays in The Hague, drawing and painting landscapes from Nature. During the winter he does sketches and portraits of ordinary people.
