梵谷是一位用盡生命創作的畫家，畢生追求真愛及真實的感受，沒有世俗的狡情做作與世儈。70年代初期，美國民歌手Don McLean被梵谷的畫感動不已，於是寫下這首Starry starry night獻給文生．梵谷；歌曲中對於星夜等幾幅畫做了文字的描述，同時也感嘆梵谷的藝術不為當時社會所賞識，以及其 梵谷窮苦潦倒、英年早逝的一生。

Just visited the exhibition of Van Gogh and Gauguin in Chicago.

Certainly, we can learn some thing from this great artist.



He was indeed not an ordinary man with so many career change.

He did have guts to pursue his own interest and not affected by other's comment.

I do not have any comment on his love with widowed cousin " Kee" and Sien, an alcoholic prostitute.







1853 born as the first son of Theodorus Vincent, a Dutch pastor



1857 Birth of Vincent's brother Theodorus (Theo)



1861-1864 attend school and learn French, English, and German. Does his first drawings



1869 apprenticed to a branch of Paris art dealers Goupil & Cie, which his uncle has established in the Hague



1872 begin life long correspondence with Theo



1873 transferred to the Brussels branch of Goupil&Cie's, then transferred to London branch. Make drawing on walks but throw them away.



1875 Permanently transferred to Paris branch. He neglects his work and is unpopular with colleagues and customers alike. He visits galleries and museums. Spends Christmas with his parents without permission from his employers



1876 Works as an assitant teacher at Isleworth, a working -class suburb of London



1877 January-April apprenticed at a bookshop in Dordrecht

May Persuades his father that he has a religious vocation and goes to Amsterdam to prepare theology faculty entrance exam. Studies Latin, Greek and Maths, but find those subjects difficult and abandon his studies.





1878 Return to Etten, then to Brussels with his farther to begin a three month course for lay preachers. Vincent is found unsuited to the job of lay preacher
