The Receptive 16 象曰:'He is treading on hoarfrost;--the strong ice will come (by and by):'--the cold (air) has begun to take form. Allow it to go on quietly according to its nature, and (the hoarfrost) will come to strong ice.
彖曰:The Receptive brings about sublime success, Furthering through the perseverance of a mare. If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead, He goes astray; But if he follows, he finds guidance. It is favorable to find friends in the west and south, To forego friends in the east and north. Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.

明治三十一年(1898)冬至,占明年我帝國氣運,筮得坤之復。

《易》例,陽為君子,陰為小人。所謂君子者,忠心謀國,不挾私曲者也。聖上聰明睿智,臨御天下,亦當以君子為法,小人為戒。若小人則唯利是務,不顧國家之隆替,孟子所謂「上下交征利」,不奪不饜,優勝劣敗,弱肉強食,亦勢所必至也。幸當聖明之世,文化日隆,雖比美、歐美各邦,亦不多讓,無如世道人心,日益頹敗,惟利是重,求其敦上古風,講論道德,喻義而不喻利者,百無一人焉,豈不慨乎!

夫坤之為卦,純陰而無陽,是小人行世,君子退藏之時。今得初爻,地變為雷,即小人擅權。專博私利之兆。其辭曰「履霜,堅冰至」,言方當履霜,小人之機心乍萌,猶霜之易消,至堅冰固結,有不可復動之勢。孔子曰:「積善之家,必有余慶;積不善之家,必有余殃。臣弒其君,子弒其父,非一朝一夕之故,其所由來者漸矣,由辨之不早辨也。」《易》曰「履霜堅冰至,蓋言順也。」如此不祥之辭,他邦征誅之朝,時或有之,至我帝國,為萬世一系之天子,下亦不乏忠君愛國之輔弼,故無慮此。今占國家氣運,而得此爻,豈可不戒慎乎?

按二爻變而為師,師者以身為儀表,教導萬民之像,是為明年及明後年之氣運也。其辭曰:「直方大,不習無不利。」此爻以陰居陰,備坤厚之德,居大臣之位。

直者,廉直而溫,方者,剛方而嚴,大者,光也,謂其功也。

君子秉直、方、大之德,雖無其位,天爵之貴者也;小人無直、方、大之德,一昧徇私,雖貴為公卿,人爵之賤者也。

君子小人之判如此,是以小人而在高位,往往借公濟私,不顧國家之安危,徒作子孫之計,自以為得計,是亦不思之甚也。夫大臣而徇利,必至賄賂公行,是非顛倒,禍亂自此而起,不知禍亂之來,富者必先罹其毒。然則小人所為肥家,實釀敗家之患。履霜堅冰而不知戒,小人之為計,不亦愚乎?

今我國家,幸得賢明之君子在上,秉正直剛方之德,行公明博大之政,正躬率物,師表群倫,庶幾陽剛來復,陰邪退避,移風易俗,太平之治,其在斯乎?

坤卦以十年為數,其純陰而無一陽,為統御不全之像,今而不知所戒,恐因循以及十年,或者有上六龍戰之禍,亦不可不預防也。

「龍戰於野」者,龍者為上,野者為野心之徒,反擊而至流血也。自「履霜」而至「龍戰」,國家之不祥莫大焉。今時大臣及各黨首領,皆廉直公正,故無患此,但占筮如此,思其終局,頗切杞憂。夫爻所謂「龍戰」者,所指何事,有識者,自能辨之。
